Tomball, a town 33 miles north of downtown Houston, is a “happening” place. This town of 13,000 has a history which started the way many little towns grew: from the arrival of the railroad. The town was named for Thomas Henry Ball, a hero many years ago, and served our country with four years in Congress. Many Germans settled in the area, leading to the extraordinary festivals and opportunities of today. Most of the activities are on or near Main Street. The denizens proudly visit their downtown regularly for fun and food.
The Railway Depot Museum
The museum continues to improve their model trains for both young and old to enjoy. The revitalized depot has existed since 1907 with roaring railroad tracks behind the depot. It is open Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tomball wisely added a park outside the depot, where young children play and the adults rest to watch the fun. In 1933 oil was struck by Humble Oil nearby, bringing more and more people to the area. Tomball became a haven for other oil producers and other endeavors.
The Farmers Market Place
Bring a shopping list for the Farmers Market which offer from 64 to 150 vendors, depending on the schedule. Buy fresh vegetables, handmade items, and a plethora of other items. Check their online schedule.
Plenty of Food
You won’t go hungry in Tomball. From the Pine Street Café for delicious breakfasts and brunch, to Mexican, barbeque, Asian and Wholly Crepe, a Russian restaurant. Find whatever you want, on or near Main Street.
Antiques
Visitors can spend many hours in the antique and resale shops. Many of the antique store are huddled on Main Street or nearby, like Granny’s Corner on Market Street.
Clever Retail Shops
On Main Street find Cloud Chief & Company where quirky items beg to be taken home. They have turquoise and silver jewelry, artwork, unusual gifts and t-shirts. It is next door to an excellent art gallery.
Astounding Blown Glass
Glass Blowing Houston is not in the downtown area, but is nestled in a lovely, wooded area at 17442 FM Highway 2920, Tomball. The company designs and makes fabulous wall and ceiling décor, as well as teaching classes.
Weather provided, walk to find extraordinary treasures, friendly shop owners, and fabulous food. Come early, stay late. But…be sure to take a ride to see the blown glass. You won’t be sorry!
